When touring Dover Castle, I was amazed at the juxtaposition of the period Royal furnishings with the stone walls of the castle, which dates from the 11th century. King Henry II ruled from 1154 through 1189, when he died, and renovations on the castle were ongoing from 1179 to 1188. This would have been his bedroom. No air conditioning and I have no idea how they heated this place in the winter. Big open fireplaces and the tapestries hanging on the walls were to keep the heat in the rooms.

Henry II didn't live at Dover full time. He had "winter" and "summer" palaces like all the other Kings and Queens in Europe and England. Dover was more of a fortification stronghold, and was where Henry entertained foreign dignitaries.
