Giovannangelo Domenico Velardo in Sassinoro, 1938

            "Giovanni" Velardo was my maternal grandmother's brother, so my great-uncle. Here he is at 35. He was born in 1903 and the photo was taken in Sassinoro in 1938, shortly before World War II. I have a good number of these "passport" photos of relatives from Sassinoro. Surely they were kept and used for the purpose of bringing other family members to New York. I don't think Giovanni ever made it to the States as an immigrant.
But I do remember meeting him when I was a boy. He came to visit his sister in the Bronx. He seemed a gentle and quiet man; he didn't speak a word of English. I have this vague memory that Giovanni came from South America, most likely Uruguay or Venezuela. We had other Sassinoro relatives who, not being allowed to enter the States, ended up in South America. Many of them eventually did make it to New York. I don't know what happened to Giovanni. 
In the photo, he is in mourning; he has a black piece of cloth attached to his jacket.
