The sky's the limit, San Galgano - a photo on Flickriver

            The Abbey of San Galgano, built between 1218 and 1288, was the first Gothic church built in Tuscany. Cistercian monks from Casamari (Frosinone) settled the area close to the banks of the river Merse. While the Abbey was once powerful and important, it fell on hard times: famine (1329), a plague decimated the monks (1348), various armies sacked and burned the Abbey. In 1786, lightning struck the bell tower which collapsed on the roof and left the great church open to the skies. The church was deconsecrated in 1789.
Who was Galgano? He was a Tuscan knight who may very well have been Galvano and/or Gawain of the tales of Arthur and the Holy Grail. He founded the nearby hermitage, a round structure, by sinking his sword into the stone: the real Excalibur? In Chretien de Troyes ‘Perceval, the story of the Grail’, which was completed around the time of Galgano’s canonisation, it is Gawain/Galvano and not Arthur who carries Excalibur, which is described as ‘the finest sword there was, which sliced through iron as through wood’.
Galgano's sword, stuck in the stone, is still there in the hermitage.
