St Margaret's, West Raynham - a photo on Flickriver

            The ruined church of St Margaret’s at West Raynham, Norfolk, was a chance discovery for me today (see date) as I was reviewing Simon Knott’s photos when it popped up on his photo stream. This site is just 15 to 18 minutes from my home, the weather was good and I was going shopping in nearby Fakenham anyway. I took a swerve out there in the way back with my shopping. I was not disappointed.

The building is believed to date from the 14th and 15th century but it slipped into ruin in the 18th century when the parish was amalgamated with next-door East Raynham. East Raynham is clearly a magnificent building which I noted as I passed. I will return.

As presented today St Margaret's has a collapsed west tower, a nave with a substantial south wall still standing, traces of a north aisle and a chancel, all in flint with stone dressings. I did see a little brick which leads me to speculate that there might be a ruined Roman building within four or five miles which was used as a quarry and robbed to build the church.

Simon Knott notes that churches in the Fakenham area have been subject to some restoration in recent years and this is no exception. Walls have been capped and consolidated. Currently six sheep graze the grounds and Simon notes that a new altar has been added and some open-air services take place. He also notes an arch through the base of the tower which may have been used as a medieval processional way.

I noted what appears to be a stone font and a statue to Saint Margaret herself. If you are in the area, it is worth a visit.
