Sacred Land III (Pitta Pitta Country, Outback Queensland)

            Pitta-Pitta People (extract from More than Surviving "the Boulia Story" by Kay Cohen pages 44 - 45):

The Pitta-Pitta "tribe", were chiefly located at the Boulia District and were identified by several dialects which together constituted a Pitta-Pitta language. There was an elaborate kinship system and at the same time a well-entrenched system of exclusion of certain groups, while hostile raids on others was not unusual.

The PItta Pitta people would travel via Herbert Downs to Glenormiston and then either on to Carlo or to Roxburgh, returning the same way to Boulai or Marion Downs. This is the route adopted when pituri is required. The plant grows in the neighborhood of Carlo, whence some of it is already taken over to Roxburgh via the Toko Ranges. This same tribe, together with the Boinji and Yellunga may also go along the Burke and Wills Rivers to Buckingham Downs, Chatsworth, and Devencourt to return with spears and koolamons; others in company or not with Kalkadoon people, may continue their journey along the ranges to Rochdale and Carandotta, returning home down the Georgina via Herbert Downs and Parapijori, exchanging government blankets, pituri, human-hair belts, "bilby-tails" etc for shields, stone-knives, opposum, twin and hand-spears.

Aborigines from the border areas were in a strong trading position because of their access to the mildly narcotic pituri plant. When the rainy season was over the Aborigines would gather the leaves and twigs from the pituri plant and prepare it by drying and mixing it with the ash of burnt acacia plants, it was then chewed to a pulp and the wad placed behind the ear when not in use. If the tribes to the north ran out of their supply, message stricks were sent to request more.
