R. C. Rees' Tydvil Hotel Circa 1891 (Broken Hill, Far West New South Wales)

The Tydvil was opened in 1891 by Welsh builder, mason and architect Rees Coventry Rees. The original building was his residence, along with his wife Eliza and five children, before he received permission from the Ward to establish a hotel. First known as the Rees Tydvil Hotel, Rees later renamed the hotel after his birth town, Merthyr Tydvil, a mining town and once the largest town in Wales.

In 1892, Eliza died in childbirth, and later the baby also died. A new licensee for the Merthyr Tydvil, William Cole, is listed in the same year. Now a widower with five young sons and a sixteen-year-old daughter, Alice, Rees gave up the hotel and established a stone shop not far away on Oxide Street, which became his family home.

In 1886, Rees left Alice in charge of the household and went off to Western Australia to work as a miner. He was away for 10 years. His fortunes did not improve, but the Tydvil Hotel has retained part of the name he gave it.

Yr adeilad gwreiddiol oedd ei breswylfa, ynghyd â'i wraig Eliza a phump o blant, cyn iddo dderbyn caniatâd Gan Y Ward i sefydlu gwesty. Yn wreiddiol Yn Cael Ei adnabod Fel Gwesty Rees Tydvil, ailenwyd Y gwesty yn Ddiweddarach Yn Rees ar ôl Ei dref enedigol, Merthyr Tydvil, tref lofaol ac ar un adeg y dref fwyaf yng Nghymru.

Yn 1892, bu Farw Eliza wrth roi genedigaeth, ac yn ddiweddarach bu farw'r babi hefyd. Mae Trwyddedai Newydd I Ferthyr Tudful, William Cole, wedi ei restru yn yr un flwyddyn. Bellach yn weddw gyda phump o feibion ifanc a merch un ar bymtheg oed, Alice, rhoddodd Rees y gwesty i fyny a sefydlu siop gerrig heb fod ymhell i Ffwrdd ar stryd ocsid, a ddaeth yn gartref i'w deulu.

Yn 1886, gadawodd Rees Alice yn gyfrifol am yr aelwyd ac aeth I Orllewin Awstralia i weithio fel glöwr. Roedd wedi bod i ffwrdd am 10 mlynedd. Nid yw ei ffawd wedi gwella, ond mae Gwesty'r Tydvil wedi cadw rhan o'r enw a roddodd iddo.
