Peak Cavern entrance, Castleton, Peak District

            The Peak Cavern is one of four large caverns around the lovely little village of Castleton in Derbyshire's Peak District. It is the nearest cavern to the village, with the entrance being just a few dozen yards from the southern edge of the village. It is under the hill upon which sits Peveril Castle, dating from the late 11th century. This cavern - along with the other three - would have been used and developed by lead miners, as lead mining was once an important local industry. An underground stream runs through the cavern where it is known as the River Styx. It comes to the surface a short distance from where this shot was taken.
