The harbour at Fowey, Cornwall - a photo on Flickriver

            On both the shortest and darkest day of the year it's nice to be able to post a shot from sunnier times. I never tire of this wonderful view of Fowey harbour from the top of the headland at Polruan. The River Fowey, which occupies a sunken river valley (or ria) at this point , provides a wide sheltered anchorage for numerous yachts and small boats. The town of Fowey is on the left of the picture. The river is deep and enables ocean-going ships to reach two quays in the far distance beyond the Bodinnick Ferry where they can upload cargoes of china clay. We also occasionally see 30,000 ton cruise liners visit the harbour as well.
