The narrow streets of Cawsand, Cornwall

            The Rame Peninsula in the far south-east of Cornwall is one of my favourite places. It is difficult to reach without a considerable detour by road, and as a result it tends to be off the beaten track. Here you will find the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, huddled close together and overlooking Plymouth Sound. They are linked by this ancient narrow street that runs up and over a small headland. Fortunately, it is one-way.

In the latter part of the 16th century, after the Spanish Armada had been defeated by a combination of the British Navy and the weather, the Spanish continued to make sporadic attacks on Cornish towns and villages, including Cawsand. This led to the development of several gun emplacements plus - later on - a mid-19th century fort which overlooks the village. This was part of the extensive fortifications surrounding Plymouth Sound which defended Plymouth and the Devonport naval base from attack.
