The harbour at Fowey, Cornwall - a photo on Flickriver

            During the warmer months the deep-water harbour at Fowey is packed with small boats at their moorings, but in the winter these miraculously disappear, and the harbour is virtually empty. From high up on the headland at Polruan there is a magnificent view of Fowey harbour and the historic town of Fowey itself, which is on the left of the picture. The headland on which Polruan is situated provides shelter for the harbour, the entrance to which is out of shot to the left. The deep-water harbour is in a ria or sunken river valley and can accommodate ships of well over 30,000 tons.
