Swanspool House, Wellingborough Town Council

            Wellingborough Council, whose offices and council chamber were in this building known as Swanspool House, was closed down along with other local councils in Northamptonshire after the main county council went bust. It was replaced by two unitary authorities, West Northamptonshire Council and North Northamptonshire Council. This building, which started life as a town house in 1759 is now the home of the new Wellingborough Town Council, which seems to have a very limited budget and few responsibilities. Its senior partner is North Northamptonshire Council.

I had often wondered about the strange shape of Swanspool House, which is where my son got married about 15 years ago. It was after I paid several visits to Bath and studied their Georgian architecture that I realised what had happened. Strange though it may seem, it was the practice in some places in the Georgian era for the architect to design just the front of the building, and then leave it up to the owners to complete the back. There is an old architectural saying, "Queen Anne fronts and Mary Anne backs".  That seems quite appropriate in this case.
