Market Day, Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria

            The Square in Kirkby Lonsdale was formerly the garden of a private house, Jackson Hall. In 1820, This became the Rose & Crown, and in 1840 it was subsequently renamed the Royal Hotel. In the meantime, in 1823 when the town's original market on Market Street became too crowded it relocated here, in the old garden. The market, which was established by charter in 1227, is still held here, in the Square, every Thursday.
