The deep dive

            The Keck Observatory takes aim at the center of the galaxy. Here's a two-row panorama that I took earlier this month on Mauna Kea. Researchers at the Keck Observatory have been doing a lot of research on black holes and other "mystery objects" in the Milky Way's galactic core, which I'm assuming is what was going on here.

When I took this panorama, the rising moon was just below the horizon, which led to a little indirect lighting on the observatory. Like other photos I've taken in the past few months, you can see Jupiter (far right), Saturn (near the core), and Mars (lower left over the horizon).

Worth noting: The laser being used was a straight line—the curvature visible in this panorama is a result of the panorama’s equirectilinear projection. Had I instead opted to stitch the panorama with a straight laser beam, the horizon and other parts of the panorama would have instead been warped.
