Atacama - a photo on Flickriver

Atacama

            Andean flamingos feeding in Laguna Chaxa (2,300m, 7545ft) under the watchful eye of the stratovolcano Lincancabur (5,916m, 19,409 ft). 

This image starts a series from the Atacama desert of Chile. Our first visit to Chile was 30 years ago to the Lake District, which is in the middle part of the country. In 2015 we went to the south, Patagonia. This year a former Chilean student of mine invited me to a conference in the arid north and we could not resist. 

When you mention the Atacama desert, the first superlative that is usually given is that it is the driest place on Earth. True, but a bit misleading. Yes, it hasn't rained in some parts in hundreds of years (in some cases estimated to be more than 500 years). But the peaks of the Andes do get snow and when it melts, it runs into the desert through narrow canyons and underground passageways. Hence, in the middle of absolutely parched dryness can be some patches of water. 

We visited the lagoon in the middle of the day, with a sun scorching down on us. All of the colors of the scene were entirely washed out before I added the circular polarizer, which created an entirely new world/image.
