Andean flamingo...

... in breeding plumage, which gives the hot pink on their neck. The laguna near the village of Machuca is a great place to see these birds (and many others) as the guardrail of the road creates a natural barrier, allowing the birds to approach reasonably close without fear. The elevation of Machuca is 4,358m (14,298ft).

This is one of six species of flamingos in the world. Three of those species were present in this laguna.

The Andean Flamingo is listed as vulnerable due to population decline (currently at about 34,000 individuals), for reasons like habit loss due to mining.

This image was taken in the late afternoon sun, which allowed the murky water to almost glow.
