Moonrise over Atacama - a photo on Flickriver

            Moon rising over Volcano Putana (5890m, 526m higher than base camp at Mount Everest) taken from 1,690m below, next to the Rio Putana (4200m). 

The white at the peak of the volcano is not snow, but rather fumaroles. If you look carefully there is a road that winds its way up the volcano. It was used as part of a sulfur mining operation at the very top. Crazy to think they would do that. 

This image was not planned. I was looking for birds and vicunas (which you can see at the bottom of the image to give a sense of scale). Upon seeing the moon, I put on a CP and took a snapshot merely to document the moment. But this is one of those images that grows on you with time (at least it grew on me). The Atacama Desert is stark, barren, vast and unforgiving. I feel this image captures a bit of each of those qualities.
