Roche-en-Régnier fut l'une des dix-huit baronnies du Velay qui donnaient droit à leur possesseur de participer au gouvernement de la contrée, privilège qui fut maintenu jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle. Roche-en-Régnier fut le siège de l'une des plus anciennes seigneuries (mentionnée au Xe) et une place forte qui appartint un temps à la Couronne.
C’est en 950 que Régnier, premier seigneur de Roche, donna son nom au futur bourg. En 1087, Durand de Roche fait don de l’église de Saint-Maurice à l’évêque du Puy et au prieur de Chamalières. Au XIIIe siècle, les Roche s’étant alliés aux plus grandes familles vivaroises, la seigneurie s’étendit vers les monts du Vivarais. Avec la mort du dernier héritier masculin, la seigneurie passe en 1340 aux mains de la famille vivaroise de Lévis, laquelle vint alors à se trouver à la tête d’un vaste domaine s’étendant du Velay jusqu’à la vallée du Rhône. En 1486, Roche fut donné en apanage par Jean de Bourbon à son fils naturel, Mathieu. Dans la première moitié du XVIe siècle, la seigneurie fut confisquée par François Ier, mais restituée ensuite à la famille de Bourbon.

Du château, édifié au XIIIe siècle sur un piton rocheux dominant le bourg, sans doute en lieu et place d’une ancienne fortification en bois, subsiste surtout, outre quelques murailles, le donjon circulaire, devenu l’emblème de cette commune. Alors que cette tour avait tôt cessé d’être la résidence ordinaire des barons de Roche, surtout après que la seigneurie fut passée aux mains de la puissante famille vivaroise de Lévis en 1340, elle garda néanmoins, étant visible de fort loin, la fonction d’affirmer la présence du seigneur en ces lieux, et de conférer en même temps de l’autorité à ses représentants permanents sur place. Conçu comme un ouvrage défensif, le donjon a sa porte d’entrée aménagée au premier étage, accessible uniquement au moyen d’une échelle, afin de le rendre plus difficile à prendre. Le rez-de-chaussée de la tour abrite les réserves de céréales, de vin et d’huile, tandis que l’étage est occupé par le logis seigneurial. Dès le XVIIIe siècle, le château est en ruines ; cependant, Noël Jourda de Vaux, dernier seigneur de Roche, fit interdiction aux habitants d’en emporter les pierres.source Wikipedia

Roche-en-Régnier was one of eighteen baronies of Velay which gave the right to their owner to participate in the government of the part of the country, the privilege which was maintained until XVIIIth century. Roche-en-Régnier was the siege of one of the most former seigneuries (mentioned in the Xth) and a fortified town which belonged one time to the Crown.
It is in 950 when Régnier, first Lord of Roche, gave its name to the future village. In 1087, Durand of Roche donates the church of Saint Maurice to the bishop of the Volcanic hill and to the prior of Chamalières. In the XIIIth century, Rock having become allied to the biggest vivaroises families, the seigneury extended towards the mounts of Vivarais. With the death of the last male heir, the seigneury falls into the hands in 1340 of the vivaroise family of Lévis, which came then to be in the head of a vast domain extending of Velay up to the valley of the Rhône. In 1486, Roche was given in privilege by Jean de Bourbon to his natural son, Mathieu.

In the first half of the XVIth century, the seigneury was seized by François Ier, but restored then to the family of Bourbon.

Of the castle, built in the XIIIth century on a rock peak dominating the village, doubtless instead of a former wooden fortification, remains especially, besides some bulwarks, the circular donjon, become the emblem of this municipality. While this tower had early stopped being the common residence of the barons of Roche, especially after the seigneury was fallen into the hands of the powerful vivaroise family of Lévis in 1340, it kept nevertheless, being visible of very far, the office to assert the presence of the Lord in these places, and to confer at the same time of the authority on his(her) spot permanent representatives. Conceived as a defensive work, the donjon has its front door fitted out in the first floor, accessible only by means of a ladder, to make it more difficult to take. The ground floor of the tower shelters the reserves of cereal, wine and oil, whereas the floor is occupied by the seigneurial lodging house.
