The Name of the Rose - a photo on Flickriver

            Melk Abbey, Danube valley, Austria; for me ever to be associated with the Umberto Eco novel and the Benedictine novice, Adso of Melk, accompanying the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville. Every two to three years I re-read it – it is a desert island book of a book, a long journey into the strangeness of 14th-century Europe, the darkness of belief that predates science and the superstition that holds hands with faith.  Here, a spiral staircase; how much is spiral staircase, how much is metaphysics and how much is trompe-l’oeuil is for you to discover. You will either keep on ascending into some transcendental form of being, or you will bang your head on a very real, quite un-transcendental, ceiling. 

But a nicely painted ceiling. And also, who knows, a finis Africae.
