From Rinks to Regiments - a photo on Flickriver

            Allow me to introduce my new book (front and back covers), From Rinks to Regiments, featuring stories of thirty-two members of the Hockey Hall of Fame who were also soldiers in the Great War of 1914-18. 

Rinks is published by Heritage House and is now available in bookstores across Canada.

My aim in this new book is to revive a fascinating cast of characters as celebrated in their time as Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid are today.

Characters such as Frank Fredrickson who survived his misadventures in the Royal Air Force, captained Team Canada to the first Olympic hockey gold medal in 1920, led the Victoria Cougars to the Stanley Cup in 1925 -- the last team not part of the NHL to hoist the Cup in victory -- and became a friend to Albert Einstein.

Or "Ching" Johnson, a hockey star beloved in New York whose bacon may have been saved when he missed the nightmare Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 because he was in military hospital being treated for gonorrhea.

Or the great Frank McGee, who in 1905 scored an unbelievable fourteen goals in a single Stanley Cup game then was killed in action on the Somme in 1916.

A Greasemonkey script that adds Flickriver links to various Flickr photo pages - user photos, favorites, pools etc, allowing to quickly open the corresponding Flickriver view.

Also, allows quickly viewing any Flickr photo on black background in large size.
