NIL (Nottingham instruments Ltd) Bino prism N.o 5 7x50

            Nottingham Industries Ltd.
 Common WW II binocular using the Porro 2 system and prone to prism damage (as this one has). Despite the chips on the prisms, image after a clean is quite stunning! Image is pin sharp, very bright despite no coatings and colours are vivid. 
If you have a prism for the right hand side, please let me know. Bak 4 prisms.

In the course of checking files at the National Archives I came across WO 185/86 which deals with the formation of N.I.L. 
In November 1940 the Ministry of Supply decided to set up a number of 'Shadow Companies'. They were to increase the manufacturing capacity of certain firms and also provide insurance against those firms home factories incurring war damage. 
Ross Ltd in Clapham and E.R.Watts and Sons Ltd in Camberwell were to share premises in Nottingham consisting of several floors in a Players cigarette factory. The Ministry would bear the costs acquiring the machinery and plant,( which would remain Government property ). 
In March 1941 Directors from Ross Ltd. visited the premises and estimated the setting up costs.On 4 June 1941 Nottingham Instruments Ltd. was incorporated with a nominal capital of £100. Ross Ltd held £74 worth of the shares and E.R.Watts and Sons Ltd. the remaining £26. 
Through June and July the Ministry and the 'parent companies', as they were called, were in discussions over financial matters. The bank would not advance any money to N.I.L. because it had no assets and was only worth £100. Ross and E.R. Watts were adamant they would not not invest their companies monies unless the Ministry guaranteed them against any loss. 
Unfortunately the file ends without any decision . 
N.I.L. is only the subject of oblique references in Ross Ltd.'s annual reports, ( it is never mentioned by name ). I believe that the Ministry operated N.I.L. as an agency company which did not need to make an operating profit but paid a fee for its management services. It appears to have been dissolved in 1946. 
N.I.L.also made binoculars for the Air Force and gun sights."
