Quite a Stir

            There was quite a commotion at Lagniappe during Mardi Gras, which of course is before Easter. A tiny green bunny showed up, and the tiny Lagniappe bears were SOME confused! 

"Mama Mama!!" It was BB (Baby Bear) "Come quick!"

"Dear ME, what is the matter, BB??! Is everyone okay??" A shrill tiny bear voice will always send me scurrying.

"Mama! The Easter Bunny is here!"

"He is! He IS!" chorused Andrew, Beverly and Jolene. "He's RIGHT here in our house with us!"

"Well hello, little bunny rabbit!" I said, for indeed, there WAS a tiny green bunny sitting in the floor with them! "What's your name? Our bears seem to think you are the Easter bunny."

"No ma'am. I'm just a tiny rabbit. I got lost from a Mardi Gras parade and I heard someone talking about your house. It sounded safe . . .  My name is Hazel."

"He IS the Easter Bunny, Mama!" said Beverly.

"Well, my dear, did he tell you he was the Easter Bunny?"

"No, Mama, but look at him! He IS a bunny!" Beverly kept giving him the eye.

"And Hazel is a girl name, Mama," said Jolene.

"Ah! That's where you are wrong, little ones! I should read you the book called Watership Down! There is a very brave rabbit in the story and HIS name is Hazel, too! Do you know that story, Hazel?"

"No ma'am, but I think it is where I got my name. Does everybody here call you Mama?"

"All you tiny Lagniappe bears should pay attention- Hazel has such lovely manners! And yes, Hazel; all the bears call me Mama. Would you like to call me Mama, too?"

"Yes ma'am . . .  uh . . .   Mama! I would surely like to, but I guess I should probably go now. I didn't mean to upset all you bears," said little Hazel, hanging his head.

"Where will you go, Hazel?" asked Andrew. "It is a particularly cold Mardi Gras, so I hope you have somewhere warm to sleep!"

"Oh, I don't know . . .  I am lost and I don't know where I belong now. I was scared. It's why I didn't talk and tell you I wasn't the Easter Bunny. I was just glad to come in and warm up."

"Can he stay, Mama? Can we keep him?" asked Andrew.

I had to burst out laughing. "We don't 'keep' people, Andrew! How funny, but if Hazel wants to stay with us, I think that is a very good idea. Don't you all think so?"

"YES Mama!! Yes!" All the bears cheered.

"EVEN if he isn't the Easter Bunny . . . " said Beverly very quietly.
