Late Afternoon at Lake Birrabeen, Fraser Island, SE Queensland

Lake Birrabeen covers 110 hectares and is located approximately 8km south of Central Station on the Central Station-Dilli Village Road,otherwise known as the Southern Lakes Drive.
Most people get to Dilli by travelling across to the Eastern Beach or 75 Mile Beach, to Eurong, then down to Dilli via the beach, so the Southern Lakes Drive is not as well traveled as many of the major roads across Fraser Island.
Before you arrive at Lake Birrabeen you pass unseen Lake Jennings which you can walk in to.
If you continue beyond the carpark at Lake Birrabeen you pass Lake Benaroon then on to the largest perched lake in the world,  Lake Boomanjin, with an area of 200 hectares.
Lake Birrabeen like, Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), is also a perched lake having formed above coffee rock well above the water table of the surrounding area.
Lake Birrabeen is often reported to be as nice a setting as Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) however while it is a nice lake with white silica sand beaches it does have more reed growth and other marine vegetation, so for some people this may not be as attractive a scene.
The sand is indeed white just as it is at  Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) but owing to the fact that the lake is accessed much less often the white sand shore zones of the beaches of Lake Birrabeen are less expansive than at Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).
However given that Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) can see up to 1000 visitors a day if you want some peace and tranquillity then Lake Birrabeen may be for you. It will also satisfy photographers depending on what time of day you get there. My recommendation would be to be there in the morning.
There are reported to be around 100 freshwater lakes on Fraser Island, most with pristine crystal clear water, notwithstanding the Tea Tree tanins that are ever present and Lake Birrabeen is no exception.
Fraser Island's lakes are the safer options for swimming since ocean swimming is definitely not safe due to unpredictable surf and moving sandbanks, not to mention sharks that patrol the length of 75 Mile Beach. not to mention sharks that patrol the length of 75 Mile Beach.
