Devastatingly in 2002 Small Hive Beetles were discovered in commercial honey bee ((Apis mellifera) hives near both Sydney and Brisbane.
Small Hive Beetles (Aethina tumida) had made their way to Australia from South Africa and have posed a major risk to the viability of the commercial honey industry in Australia.
Effective solutions to prevent this pest from entering hives and laying eggs have been difficult to come by.
My inventive amateur beekeeper brother,faced with the problem in his single hive has come up with a system that significantly reduces the number of beetles entering the hive.
