When we arrived in San Francisco we had not booked a tour of Alcatraz as we had no real plans to go there. With some time up our sleeves we decided to see if we could get on a tour. With the decision made we soon found out that you need to have booked many months in advance to visit the island.
On speaking to our hotel concierge we were advised there was a way to get on the island. To do so meant buying a Big Red Bus Ticket which somehow gave us access to tickets they obviously hold in reserve.
The long and short of it all was that we did get to visit Alcatraz, even if we did not use our Big Red Bus Ticket at all.
While we paid a premium for our visit to Alcatraz we were pleased to have had the opportunity.
Apparently our unused Big Red Bus Ticket remains valid for another 12 months from the date of purchase. I doubt we will get back there in that time frame.
