Tree No. 3 - The Hulk - Middle Brother National Park, Johns River, Mid North Coast, NSW.

This Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt) tree is the second big tree you see about 30 metres up the trail which leads from the carpark after you pass the large tree with the buttress like root.
I have called this tree 'The Hulk' in the absence of being aware of any other name for it. It is a little further up the track from Tree No. 2 and is so named because it stands tall still despite the whole centre being burned out in a bushfire. The area inside the tree is big enough to stand half a dozen adults. The trunk base is quite massive being over 4 metres across at ground level. The trunk splits into 4 segments from about 2-3 metres above the ground so you can actually easily step into the centre of the tree.
This burnt out tree is probably senescent but is quite tall nevertheless, possibly over 50 metres.
It may well have been a tree of larger volume than either Benaroon or The Bird tree.
The trail continues on down the hill about 50 metres to a large Blackbutt tree called 'Benaroon' which is surrounded by a timber platform to protect the roots from compaction and Phytophthora foot borne fungal infection.

It is possible some people manage to see the Bird Tree from the carpark but don't find the unsigned track which leads past these other 2 trees and down to 'Benaroon'.
The road up to the 'Bird Tree' carpark is probably best left to all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicles as it is rough in places. Access is via TV Road just north of Johns River.

These Blackbutt trees here at Middle Brother National Park are reported to be some of the largest trees by volume in Australia.
I would have to say though that some of the Red Tingle (Eucalyptus jacksonii) trees in the south west of Western Australia and some of our East Coast rainforest giants would definitely have to rival these Blackbutts for volume.
