The remains of the Prefectural Industry Promotion Building, listed in 1996 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site are preserved as a monument in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the centre of Hiroshima, Japan - now known as the Genbaku Dome.

The ruins are all that remain from the 6th August 1945 atomic bomb attack that devastated Hiroshima and serve as a peace memorial to the people who were killed.
Over 70,000 people were killed instantly, and another 70,000 suffered fatal injuries from the radiation.
At 8:15 on August 6, 1945, a United States Airforce Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber known as the Enola Gay attacked Hiroshima dropping the first atomic bomb ever to be used in war.
The bomb dubbed 'Little Boy' detonated almost directly above the Prefectural Industry Promotion Building dome. The building's vertical columns were able to resist the nearly vertical downward force of the blast, and parts of the concrete and brick outer walls remained intact. The center of the blast was displaced 490 feet (150 m) horizontally and 1,968 feet (600 m) vertically from the dome, having slightly missed the original target, the distinctive "T"- shaped Aioi Bridge. Everyone inside the building was killed instantly.
The Genbaku Dome, originally close to Shima Surgical Clinic was initially scheduled to be demolished after the war with the rest of the ruins, but the fact that it remained mostly intact delayed those plans. As Hiroshima was rebuilt around the dome, it became a subject of controversy — some wanted it torn down, while others wanted to preserve it as a memorial of the bombing and a symbol of peace. It stands today as an important reminder of the horrors of war and is central to the Hiroshima Peace Park.

The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May 1945, but the Pacific War continued. The United States strategy became one of adopting brutal force to bring an end to the Pacific War. Following the August 6th 1945 uranium bombing of Hiroshima, and 3 days later the dropping of 'Fat Man', a Plutonium bomb, on Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies on the 15 August 1945 , signing the Instrument of Surrender on the 2nd September, officially ending World War II.
The bombings led, in part, to post-war Japan's adopting Three Non-Nuclear Principles, forbidding the nation from nuclear armament. The role of the bombings in Japan's surrender and their ethical justification are still debated. Reference WIKIPEDIA

On the 6 August 2012, the 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged countries to work together to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons and stressed the importance of honouring victims and survivors by sharing their stories with new generations.

"The tragedy in Hiroshima decades ago continues to resonate today,” Mr. Ban said in a message to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, honouring those killed..

“There must never be another nuclear attack – never. The elimination of such weapons is not just a visionary goal, but the most reliable way to prevent their future use, the UN chief stressed in his message."
