Many surfers call this beach Yagon although technically its name is Submarine Beach. Treachery Beach, the next beach to the north, is also confusingly sometimes referred to as Yagon.
The term Yagon though is used to describe this area of Myall Lakes National Park.
Access to Submarine Beach is from the Yagon campground.
A headland known as Yagon Gibber lies between Submarine Beach and Treachery Beach where a good privately operated campground and cabins exists, interestingly, right in the middle of Myall Lakes National Park..
Submarine Beach extends 8.8 km from Yagon Gibber to Big Gibber Headland. Beyond the old fishing shacks, known as Middle Camp, the beach becomes known as Fiona Beach. The beach is entirely contained within the Myall Lakes National Park and access is restricted to the northern Yagon car park, via a 4WD track from Seal Rocks.
Submarine Beach is named after the fact that the Royal Netherlands (Dutch) Navy submarine K-IX was beached here on the 8th June, 1945 and is now covered with up to 3 metres of sand.

When a lot of sand is removed from the beach in big storms the submarine, has become occasionally visible. The K-IX wreck was sighted in 1969,1974,1984, 1999 (after a search exposed the wreck),after storms in 2000 then again in September 2001. I can find no information beyond these dates.

Originally the whole beach had been known as Fiona Beach prior to the submarine grounding.Fiona Beach was named following the loss of the iron steamer Fiona on 29 January 1882. That wreck site lies 3km south of the K-IX submarine. The Fiona under Capt. Curphy, was on voyage from Sydney to Brisbane with an expensive cargo of general goods and 5 passengers, when she ran aground at full speed in dense fog.

"............ Early June 1945: While being towed out of Sydney (departure 6th or 7th June, heading for Darwin) by the Dutch minesweeper Abraham Crijnssen the tow breaks and K IX is driven ashore (7/8 June). The loss of the tow is not noticed by the Abraham Crijnssen crew until sunrise at June 8. A plane is called in to search for the submarine. Around 15:00 hrs the plane spots the K 9. The submarine is not yet stranded, but the search is called off because it is getting dark. The next day (June 9) at 10:15 hrs the plane spots K 9 once again. But now the submarine is wrecked on Fiona Beach, Seal Rocks, on the central coast of New South Wales (3 miles WSW of Sugar Loaf Point). Abraham Crijnssen tries to tow the hulk of the beach but because of the storm they have to give it up. Because of the high cost involved the Dutch Navy does not attempt again to get the hulk afloat.........."
