Rochester high street - a photo on Flickriver

            Taken at the annual Dickens festival which returned this year after a two year Covid break.  Very little in the way of Dickensian characters and the few that were around gave us a miserable look as we tried to take their picture and turned away.  If it wasn't for the BAE brass band, who are the only decent thing at this event, and the fact my husband likes to sit at the Arrow and down pints with his colleagues, probably wouldn't have attended.

Used to be a good event a few years ago, now just a victim of commercialism.  The actual Dickens aspect has been lost.  Crowds were tantamount to a super-spreader event, and you couldn't move on the high street.  Prices for food and drink were extortionate - £8 for a burger which wasn't very nice and hardly any meat in it.  Also clusters of people giving Covid tests out everywhere.  How festive.  How frightfully Dickensian.

Also they need to stop the fake snow - aka washing up liquid - which got into my 7 year old son's eyes and made them sting.  Plus goes all over your phone, camera, everything and is a pain to get off.  My phone screen is still stained from it and I was fed up of having to stop and clean the camera every few minutes due to fake snow smearing the lens.  Added to this is the safety aspect.  Because it's not really snow, ie it doesn't melt and it's washing up liquid, Northgate and Castle Hill become a smeary slippery path of suds - just waiting for someone to fall and break a leg.
