The march

            At the edge of the Thar desert, leaving the little greenery behind, a family begins their long arduous trek for their remote hamlet carrying the ration. It's not hard to imagine that the effect of poverty and hardship is more vicious on children and women. 

What's difficult to see here is the unstoppable march of the desert. In every summer, when the sand is dry, the constant stiff wind moves the sand dunes a little further, smothering any remaining shrub and stunted trees in its way. With his pointed finger, my guide drew an imaginary line in the desert to tell me that this end of the desert was over there a decade ago.
