Il avait été prévu ce soir-là de traverser la baie à partir du Mont-Saint-Michel vers l’îlot de Tombelaine. En cette période de l’année, les eaux sont basses. Une pluie fine ne cessait de tomber et un peu de brume avait fait son apparition. L’eau qui nous arrivait souvent au-dessus du genou nous paraissait bien froide. Et à certains endroits, le courant fort nous obligeait à nous serrer les uns aux autres, en nous tenant par les bras. Après une courte pause sur les rochers de la « tombe d’Hélène » et avant que la nuit ne nous enveloppe, le guide a invité le groupe à prendre le chemin du retour. Nous marchions en silence, dans une sorte de recueillement, vers cette merveille accrochée à son rocher de granit, émergeant comme un mirage de la brume et de la pénombre environnantes. Les pieds nus foulaient les sédiments sableux et les lumières de l’abbaye nous montraient le chemin. C’est à la lumière d’une lampe de poche que nous avons grimpé les premiers rochers du Mont près de la chapelle Saint-Aubert. Avec sans doute, pour chacun d’entre nous, une douce joie intérieure. Un peu comme celle qui devait faire vibrer le cœur du pèlerin, tout au bout de son long chemin, et qui le poussait à crier : Mont-Joie !

It was planned to cross the bay that night from the Mont-Saint-Michel to the small island of Tombelaine. In this time of the year the water level is low. A light rain kept falling and a little haze spread over the bay. The cold water was often above the knee. In some places, the strong water flow forced us to tighten each other, holding by the arms. After a short break on the rocks of the "grave of Hélène" and before dark night envelops the bay the guide invited us to take the way back. We walked in silence, in a kind of meditation, towards this wonder hanging on its rock of granite, emerging like a mirage in the surrounding mist and darkness. Bare feet trod the sandy sediments and the lights of the Abbey showed us the path. It is at the light of a torch that we climbed the first rocks of the Mount near the Chapel of St. Aubert. With probably for each of us, a sweet inward joy. A bit like the one that was vibrating the heart of the pilgrim, at the very end of his long road, and urged him to shout: Mount-Joy!
