The penetration of clothing by 850nm NIR light

This experiment investigates the ability of near infrared (NIR) radiation to pass through normal clothing where it can then penetrate deep into the body to improve the performance of the mitochondria (energy-generating organelles) in our bodies. On a clothes hanger I put an olive green T-shirt, a light blue shirt and a woollen pullover, ie. six layers.

With the Candeer 54W 660/850nm therapeutic lamp placed about 30cm behind the hanger I used my full-spectrum camera to take the following images:

1. With the Kolari ‘hot-mirror’ filter on the lens (to convert the camera to a normal visible response, ie. remove the NIR and UV sensitivity), I took the left hand image with some daylight coming through the room shutters. [left]

2. I then switched on the NIR lamp for the centre image with the same setup. [centre]

3. For the last image I exchanged the Kolari filter for the NIR pass filter RG780 which cuts everything below ~750nm. [right]

My Sekonic radiometer only measures to 780nm so I could not use it directly to measure the 850 transmission. However, I see a strong broad wing from the 850 emission extending onto the detected range which shows that the 850nm transmission of the clothing is very much higher than it is at 660nm.
