Smiling Fern

            I met Fern at the Mount Pleasant (DC) Farmers' Market today. We were both wandering around the market taking photographs of the people and the produce.

I stopped Fern and asked her about her camera. She told me that she had been an avid photographer until about ten years ago when she became fully occupied raising her children. She recently joined a photography class, bought a new Nikon camera, and is back taking pictures. We remarked at how much fun and inexpensive digital photography was after the initial investment of a camera.

I told Fern about the 100 Strangers project in Flickr and asked her if she would mind if I took her photograph. I think she was surprised and didn’t expect to be on the “other” side of the camera. She said, “Now, I’m going to tell myself what I tell all my subjects, ‘Just act natural,’” and then she gave me this beautiful smile. I decided to use this photo for the strangers project because she was holding her camera up for me to include. I’ll post the smiling photograph as well.
