            Prayer wheels are used to accumulate wisdom and merit (good karma) and to purify negativities (bad karma). In Buddhism, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have created a variety of skillful means (upaya) to help bring practitioners ever closer to realizing enlightenment. The spiritual method for those practicing with a prayer wheel is very specific (with slight variations according to different Buddhist sects). The practitioner most often spins the wheel clockwise, as the direction in which the mantras are written is that of the movement of the sun across the sky. As the practitioner turns the wheel, it is best to focus the mind and repeat the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra. Not only does this increase the merit earned by the wheel's use, but it is a mind-stabilization technique that trains the mind while the body is in motion. Intoning the mani mantra with mindfulness and the "Bodhicitta" motivation dramatically enhances the effects of the prayer wheel. However, it is said that even turning it while distracted has benefits and merits, and it is stated in the lineage text that even insects that cross a prayer wheel's shadow will get some benefit. Each revolution is as meritorious as reading the inscription aloud as many times as it is written on the scroll, and this means that the more Om Mani Padme Hum mantras that are inside a prayer wheel, the more powerful it is. It is best to turn the wheel with a gentle rhythm and not too fast or frantically.

Según los textos antiguos sobre las ruedas de plegaria, las ruedas de plegaria son utilizadas para acumular sabiduria y mérito (karma bueno) y para purificar los elementos negativos (karma malo). En el budismo, los Budas y Bodhisattvas han creado una variedad de formas (upaya) para ayudar a que los practicantes se aproximen aún más a la iluminación. El método espiritual para aquellos que oran con una rueda de plegaria es muy específico (con pequeñas variaciones de acuerdo a las diferentes sectas budistas). El practicante hace girar por lo general la rueda en sentido horario, en la dirección en la que los mantras están escritos, que es la dirección del sol cruzando el cielo. Es de destacar que se indica que incluso girando la rueda distraídamente también trae beneficios y méritos y se afirma que en el texto de la rueda que incluso un insecto que cruza la sombra de la rueda se verá beneficiado. Un giro tiene un mérito equivalente al de leer la inscripción en voz alta, cuantas más veces el mantra Om Mani Padme Hum está escrito en la rueda más poderosa es la rueda de plegaria (ya que será repetido más veces el mantra) . Es mejor girar la rueda a un ritmo suave, no demasiado rápido o frenéticamente.
