Foot care

            Nicolai Abildgaard (1743-1809) -  The wounded Philoctetes  (1775). In the collection of the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen.

In spite of critics finding fault with the anatomy of the protagonist (where is the neck? isn't the upper body too small in relation to the legs?), this painting is a terrific eye-catcher. It was painted during Abildgaard's 5-year scholarship in Rome where he immersed himself in the study of the classics and the artists of the Italian Renaissance. Coming home to Denmark with this in his baggage, he was almost immediately offered a position as professor (and soon after, director) of the Royal Academy of Art, where students made numerous copies of the painting.
