L’origine di questa usanza va ricercata nel Medioevo: nel IX secolo, infatti, papa Niccolò I decise di commemorare la frase che Gesù rivolge a Pietro nel Vangelo, dopo l’Ultima cena: «Prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte». Ordino così che un gallo dovesse sormontare il più alto pinnacolo di ogni cattedrale, abbazia o chiesa della cristianità; poiché le banderuole segnavento erano già in uso, per mettere il gallo nel punto più alto si dovette montarlo sopra le banderuole.
