Proportion Lexicon Spreadsheet (draft)

Small number (1-16), root rectangle, and Bringhurst’s geometric proportions with related data arranged in ascending order by ratio.

This version is a draft. Recommendations, clarifications, corrections, etc. are welcome and encouraged.

Notes by Column
Due to spreadsheet cell overlap, some columns, particularly "Bringhurst" may run into other columns.

Height and Width
The height and width of the proportion. Smaller number is always used as height.

Ratio
The ratio of the height to the width.

Maj. Div
The major division for that proportion. In most cases the major has to do with a consonant number in a musical ratio.

Diag
The length of the diagonal of a rectangle in the given proportion. This number has been limited to two decimal points for the purposes of this spreadsheet.

Half Ratio
The ratio of the given proportion of the rectangle is cut in half. For example, a square cut in half gives two rectangles with a proportion of 1:2, a half ratio of 2.

Halving
The relationship with other proportions when halving.

"Pair" indicates that the given proportion, when halved, results in a second proportion that when halved results in the initial given proportion.

"Single" indicates that when halved, the given proportion results in itself. This is uniquely true for the 1:1.41 or root two rectangle.

A number (e.g. "1-" or "3-") followed by a single or multiple other ratios indicates that the given proportion is that many steps away from a "Pair" proportion. For example, 1:5 halved results in a 2:5, 2:5 halved results in a 4:5, 4:5 halved results again in 2:5. So 1:5 in this column is displayed as "2- (2:5, 4:5)".

Bringhurst, Root Rectangle, Alberti, etc.
The ways in which authors or systems of note refer to the given proportion including Roger Bringhurst, the root rectangle system, Leone Battista Alberti, Fra Luca Pacioli, the square, musical ratios, and modern examples.
