André Lalande, 6th Chasseurs Alpins Battalion, Norway, 1940

            André Lalande was a French Army officer who fought in World War II as a member of the Chasseurs Alpins (the elite mountain infantry of the French Army) and later the French Foreign Legion. 

A graduate of the Saint-Cyr military academy, he was assigned to the 6th Chasseurs Alpins Battalion at his request. In the spring of 1940, Lalande fought in the Norwegian mountains during the Battle of Narvik until he was wounded by a bomb blast. Afterwards, he was promoted to captain and made Knight of the Legion of Honor.

After the armistice between France and Germany, Lalande joined the Free French Forces. In December 1941, he was assigned to the 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion, which was stationed in Beirut. He fought in the Battle of Bir Hakeim in May 1942, a battle in which he was wounded in action again.

Later, in 1944, his unit took part in the assault against the Gustav Line in Italy, then onto the campaign of France. Finally, Lalande participated in the Battle of Alsace in the Alps in April 1945, fighting the last pockets of German resistance. André Lalande finished out World War II with the rank of Battalion Commander and as a decorated hero.
