576 The John Wilson Fountain (7), Gateacre

            The heart of Gateacre is the green, the gift to the city from Andrew Walker of The Grange (at the top of Gateacre Brow) of Walker Art Gallery fame.
The John Wilson Fountain (the working drinking fountain long since gone) stands on the green. Built in 1883 in the form of many medieval village crosses, it commemorates John Hays Wilson, a former Chairman of the Water Committee of Liverpool City Council. He lived locally and was responsible for overseeing the Lake Vrynwy reservoir and aqueduct, bringing Welsh water to the city. He regularly opened his home (Lee Hall) to the public and instituted the Tarbock Races in his grounds. Much loved locally - and throughout the city. The memorial is adorned with many carvings of fish and other animals.
