Milan 'Peter Witt' Tram no. 1692 - built 1930 - see below

Peter Witt trams represent an international design of tramcar. Developed by the commissioner of the transit organisation in Cleveland, USA around 1912, they were among the first vehicles to adopt passenger flow, whereby passengers enter by one door, move through the vehicle and alight from a different door.Considered very advanced for its time, the Peter Witt design was used by many cities in the USA and several in Europe.
Milan had 502 Peter Witt trams, built in a short period between 1927 and 1930. (Melbourne built five trams to the Peter Witt layout at about the same time.) About 170 of these cars are still in use in Milan, the oldest trams in fleet service anywhere in the world. Their simplicity and reliability has led to them outlasting many newer tram types. Around ten Peter Witt trams from Milan are also in use in San Francisco on a tourist service to Fisherman's Wharf. Milan's trams are single-ended, but the Museums car has been modified to enable it to run on tracks laid out for double-ended trams.
No. 1692 has been displayed at the Hawthorn Tramway Museum in Melbourne. It has run on special occasions in that city.
