Yuquiyú - a photo on Flickriver

Yuquiyú

            Juan Diego, El Yunque

For the Taíno, the aboriginal tribes that inhabited the island before the Spanish came, el Yunque was the place where the benevolent god Yuquiyú dwelled. He protected them from the evil god Juracán (Hurricane came from that word). I have been around El Yunque since I was very little and I know the reason why the Taíno worshipped this mountain, El Yunque is truly a magical place. 

El Yunque stands on the eastern portion of the island and is believed that, because of its inmense mass, causes hurricanes to debilitate. At least that's what teachers taught us at school, you know how everything changes.

Since hurricane María we haven't been able to visit this part of El Yunque, is closed to the public. I imagine land slides and debris everywhere makes it impossible and/or dangerous to reach these places where the waterfalls are abundant. I hope the Federal Government take care of the cleaning and restoration of this National Park so we can enjoy it again.
