A Cambridge student invented a country here!

Humberstone Road, Cambridge. Cambridge can lay claim to many inventions. One of the lesser well known ones is the invention of a country and the name for that country: Pakistan. On January 28, 1933, Choudhary Rahmat Ali, a law student at Emmanuel College, came up with the Pakistan scheme and launched a movement from 3 Humberstone Road, Cambridge. The word "PAKISTAN" is an acronym". Rahmat Ali, who hailed from the Punjab area of what was then British India", made up the name from the letters of the areas that were to comprise the new country. 

Edward Welbourne, a Master of Emmanuel College, has said of Rahmat Ali: “Ideas no doubt already developed in India fermented in his mind, until he issued from his undergraduate lodgings a pamphlet in which he demanded the creation of an independent Muslim state in North India, and gave to it the name now well known, of Pakistan”. Little wonder that Pakistan is often called the "Cambridge student scheme".
