Mississippi, Henderson Point (CDP) - a photo on Flickriver

            It was late when I got to Henderson Point, well past the sunset I had hoped to photograph. I was about to cross the Bay Saint Louis Bridge when I decided to try to capture the bridge at dusk. I took a road I had never seen to a place I had never been — a narrow strip of land at the end of Pass Christian, Miss., just before you get to the city of Bay Saint Louis.

There was a little parking area and a sign that indicated this was a public boat launch, but the place I needed to be was several feet over, near some private piers. I glanced and saw the houses were rather far away, so I decided to take my chances. I wasn't going to walk on the pier anyway.

I had my tripod set up and was lining up my shot when I heard a male voice behind me. I turned to face an elderly man — the owner of the pier.

I braced myself for an altercation, but instead, he told me how his wife had died and he was lonely. He invited me to come inside his house, to stay whenever I wanted. He reassured me that as an old man, he had no sinister intentions toward me — reassuring since he was at least 50 years older.

I missed most of the sunset, because it would have been rude to turn my back on this lonely man as he poured his heart out to me.

But in the end, I was rewarded with a new friend, a memorable experience, and a picture I'm pleased with. Not a bad photo excursion.
