3/365 - Family traditions - a photo on Flickriver

            When I was a child, no fishing trip was complete without a trip to Jemison's for bait. My grandpa always sat me on the counter and let me watch as the cashier loaded our bags with raw shrimp, minnows, and -- occasionally -- squid.

Now that I have moved home, I continue to make the old familiar bait run, and it always makes me smile. Some people may just see an old building with concrete floors and the stench of raw seafood, but I will forever and always see my grandpa -- a little short man in navy blue or brown Dickies -- picking out the precious bait that I always immediately lost with every cast of my line. (He used to joke that the only reason I ever caught anything was that my lead sinkers smacked the fish in the head as they leapt out of the water to catch my flying bait.)

It's a happy memory, and though the only things biting today were mosquitoes, it's all ok. Every day is a good day to fish, and when you live on the water, every day is a good day.
