The so-called Trivulzio Diatreta Cup, a 4th century glass jug surrounded by a web of glass circles, around the surface runs Latin inscription "BIBE VIVAS MULTIS ANNIS": "Drink and live many years", Civico museo archeologico di Milano

            This splendid example of highly prized workmanship from the 4th century A.D., the Trivulzio Diatreta Cup, known by the name of the collector who brought it to Milan in the 18th century, together with an ivory comb and other objects lost over the years, comprised the substantial grave goods laid in the marble sarcophagus of a high-ranking personage buried in the Novara area.

The cup belongs to a class of rare and precious manufactured objects produced in specialised workshops, active perhaps in the Rhineland-Danubian area (Germany), in Northen Italy, in Illyria (Albania and Dalmatian coast) and in the East, or by itinerant craftsmen in the service of the Imperial court. It is, in fact, one of the best-known examples of vasa diatreta (from the greek diatretos, pierced, open work) made of colourless or multi-coloured glass, blown into a mould and then etched on the surface so as to obtain an open-work decoration, attached to the body of the object by tiny filaments of glass.

This is the only specimen of this kind of objects which survived until the present completely intact.
