The Old Elk Cotton Mills, Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee

            This old mill building was at mile post 40.1 of the old Duck River Valley Narrow Gauge Railway and known as the Elk Cotton Mill.   The mill was placed at this location to increase freight efficiency with the Duck River Valley Narrow Gauge railway line.
The Elk Cotton Mill in Fayetteville operated from about 1900 until 1996 when it closed.  I found it interesting that at the time the mill was established many of the mill workers were actually underage children.  At that time child labor laws made it legal to employ children as young as age twelve in factories, workshops, mines, or mills in Tennessee. Now this old mill building it is known as the Elk Yarn Mills and it appears they rent storage spaces.
