Dying Gaul , Dying Galatian the local copy- part of a victory series -from the Roman copy

The local Auckland museum copy of a Celtic warrior or herald and carnyx trumpeter (the war horn) carrier .The Galatian (Galatoi) Celt is captured in a bronze original from the Hellenistic or Greek world .This copy is derived from the later marble Roman copy .The Gaul who the Romans originally named the 'Galli', the earlier Greeks the 'Galatoi' or 'Keltoi' was an encounter, sometimes an enemy, of both these 'classical' Greco-Roman cultures. Considered fallen and defeated this famous 'noble savage' motif, the unknown other or a 'barbarian' icon by the so-called civilized world or the victor who 'writes' history.The Greeks even called the Romans 'barberi' before they saw their organized armies in the south of Italy.Romans were rapid acquirers of Greek culture.

The Greeks distinguished between the oriental Celts whom they called Galatoi
( Galatians orginally from Gaul) & the Celts of western Europe whom they called Keltoi.
Their successors the Romans made a further distinction by naming the now 'French'-
based Celts 'Galli' (Gauls) and the 'British' -based Celts 'Belgae' (orginally from what is now Belgium) and Britanni (Britons)

The Hellenistic period .-is the lapse from the time the Alexandrian empire until the death of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, this stage meant the disappearance of the Polis or city- states to set up a political unit under Macedonian rule.
With the expansion of the Alexandrian empire, Greek culture is universalized, but also adapts and supports the contributions East. Features of Hellenistic sculpture:
At this time the ideals of harmony, as and balance of classical Greece are replaced by new values. At this time it seeks to represent the individual, the picturesque or the dramatic.

There are many copies of the this classical work it has certainly inspired others : firstly the Romans who copied the now lost Hellenistic (ancient Greek colonies) bronze original as part of a victory set , from Anatolia.The local Celts, known to both Romans and Greeks as 'Galatoi' or 'Galatae', in Anatolia where they became the Galatians ,settled.I didn't think the Gaul went into battle naked (except for the Gaesata, in fact they were well known for their Braccae or breeches) copied by some of the Romans. The Romans fought the other Celts, a century before, and the Gauls some time later as well.The Celtic tribes did not always unite and fought more creatively and individually in battles.So much so that the Romans banned this form of man to man combat or conflict resolution with their warriors.

The following was inspired by an actual peat bog-body sacrifice from the late bronze age in Ireland (or Denmark).

" As if he had been poured in tar, he lies on a pillow of turf and seems to weep the black river of himself. The grain of his wrists is like bog oak, the ball of his heel like a basalt egg. His instep has shrunk cold as a swan's foot or a wet swamp root. His hips are the ridge and purse of a mussel, his spine an eel arrested under a glisten of mud.
