Logan Square Trust and Savings Bank, Fred Popp Death

            Around 1922 Fred Popp, owner of the Logan Square Trust and Savings Bank, was found in his car with a bullet in his head. The coroner hesitated to rule his death a suicide because of canceled checks Popp had on him.

Suspicion of homicide fell on Paul Popp, his son and executive in charge of operations, whose name was on the canceled checks. Police also looked at David Weiderman, the vice president, who was suspected because he had embezzled $56,000 from the bank. June Bacon, a woman with whom Popp was having an affair, along with her boyfriend Frank Wolzy, were trying to bleed Popp for money, which he funneled from the bank. June threatened to sue Popp for "alienation of affection" when he started dating Clair Heilman, June's friend. Police questioned all three of them.

The board of directors found that the bank was worthless, having been mismanaged by Weiderman, Paul and Fred Popp. The bank was $204,000 in the hole and Fred's life insurance was worth $160,000.

The coroner ruled Fred Popp's death a suicide.
