McCormick Inn, Attempted Murder of "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn

            "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn, one of Al Capone's right hand men, was at the McCormick Inn on March 7, 1928 speaking with the hotel owner. At some point McGurn excused himself to make a phone call. Upon entering a phone booth, McGurn was ambushed by four men firing pistols and a machine gun into the booth. The men were working as contract killers for Bug Moran and included brothers Frank and Peter Gusenberg.  McGurn somehow survived the attack and was treated for only minor injuries.

When questioned about who had attacked him, McGurn simply told the police, "I'll take care of the matter myself."

In 1929 Peter and Frank Gusenberg were murdered along with five other men in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, allegedly masterminded by Jack McGurn.

Now know as The James Hotel.
