On this day in 1869, my great, great grandfather, William Bills, married Marthine and Petrina Amundsen. The sisters were wives number two and three of what would become five concurrent wives.
While both sides of my family emigrated from England to the U.S. specifically to join the Mormon church, the Bills side of my father's family were actually among the very first group of people to join the Mormon church when it was centered in Nauvoo, Illinois in the mid-1830s. William's father was a tailor who made clothes for Joseph Smith.
At age 12, William was among the first group of Mormons to make the journey to Utah. Once there, he got to marrying and fathering children -- 38 eventually.
Now I agree, the idea of polygamy is very bizarre to me. Never in my life have I thought that having more wives would make me a happier man. But you've got to admit that marrying two Norwegian sisters on the same day takes some sort of prize for kinkiest ancestor.
(Full disclosure -- the wedding wasn't actually today, but March 1, 1869.)
