Reflections of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

            The inspiration for this photograph came from reading that some landscape photographers create the illusion of, for example, mountains reflected in a lake, by pasting an inverted image of the mountain into the place where the lake should be. 

This image is based on a photograph of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, which is on the Gateshead side of the river Tyne, taken from the Newcastle side of the river and given a similar treatment. Here the part of the original photograph that was above the level of the river was copied, inverted, and tweaked a little to make it look more like a reflection in water, before being pasted over the original river section.

On a historical note, the foundations for the Baltic Flour Mills were laid in the late 1930s although construction was paused during the Second World War. The mill was operational from 1950 until its closure in 1976. The idea of converting it into a Centre for Contemporary Art came about as part of the regeneration of Gateshead in the 1990s.
